A campus network is a local 5G network that companies and other organizations can operate privately for their own use independently of the public mobile communications infrastructure. In Germany, the Federal Network Agency provides the licensed frequency range from 3.7 to 3.8 GHz for this purpose.
The mobile campus network is an isolated and secure 5G network that is, in principle, strictly separated from the public network. However, if desired, it can also be connected to the local company network or the internet and thus tailored precisely to the specific requirements of industrial applications.
Fraunhofer IIS offers to use a mobile campus network as its own 5G testbed to conduct detailed investigations of its applications under isolated conditions. The 5G campus network consists of a 5G base station, the core network, an antenna, and a corresponding radio unit (radio head). The antenna and radio head provide seamless network coverage within a range of several hundred meters. The spanned 5G cell offers a bandwidth of up to 100 MHz. It is also possible to add a further cell to cover both indoor and outdoor areas on a site. The base station and the core network run as an integrated software solution on a local computer (edge solution).
