Secure communication systems are the basis of a digital society. The security of data exchange is of fundamental importance not only for private individuals, but also for our innovation-based economy.

The security of communication networks must be guaranteed, especially when confidential information is exchanged between authorities or when sensitive (company) data is stored long-term.

Quantum communication for secure data transmission

The security of current communication networks is essentially based on mathematical assumptions and, in some cases, will not offer sufficient protection against new technologies of the future, such as quantum computers. In the long term, tap-proof and tamper-proof data transmission can only be achieved with the help of quantum communication.

Fields of research:

  • Overall architecture for systems for quantum-safe communication
  • Novel quantum keys

QuNET

The QuNET funding initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research aims to enable long-term data security. The focus of the work is on quantum key distribution (QKD). It enables the exchange of symmetric keys, whose security can be quantified, over long, medium and short distances using free-space and fiber systems.
